Inspirations

This is a self-portrait by Jean-Michel Basquiat, an American artist who died far to young at age 27.

I admire his artwork for many reasons. The meanings behind his pieces are often more involved than one would think. His artwork tackles numerous complex issues of race, class, identity, and much more.

His work is unique—no artist can recreate it, and no one did it before him. Truly one of a kind.

Basquiat's work has taught me bravery, knowing my work has meaning, and that it's okay not to follow the norm.

Dawn Staley has been a huge inspiration to me for years. The strides she is making for poc and women fill me with ambition.

In June 2023, I saw her speak in Cannes, France. The way she spoke with such conviction and humility has stayed with me ever since.

The main thing Staley has taught me is self-worth: knowing you are capable and worthy of all good things.

This is my sister Alana.

If you have older siblings, you know the feeling of always looking up to them. Growing up, I always wanted to be just like Alana. We played the same sports, took the same classes, I followed her in nearly everything she did.

My family inspire me every day to be the best version of myself. Alana demonstrates grace in everything she does, and I aspire to achieve that level of confidence and grace in all aspects of my life.
